Materials tell stories. To follow materials around is to get to hear some those stories: from their origins-growth, harvesting, sourcing to their treatment involving tools and machines; from their solidification into a usable object to their process of ageing, conservation, and disintegration into material once again. By tracing these events in a material life, we can discover what we might describe as a material biography.
Making a material biography means to carefully research what is known about a particular material. Some knowledge is easy to come by, but a lot information, in particular about the ‘dark side’ of materials, is often hidden. To make a material biography therefore not only means to combine what is known but also uncover what is not known about a material. As a result, material biographies will not only generate more knowledge but also raise awareness for the contexts in which materials exist and potentially change how artists, designers and makers at large, work with them.
